Copper Jewelry is Making a Comeback
In the ever-changing world of jewelry, copper is a timeless classic. While it’s been cherished for centuries, copper jewelry is enjoying a well-deserved resurgence. Handmade copper pieces, in particular, are becoming a hot trend again, and it’s easy to see why. Let’s dive into what makes copper jewelry so special and why it’s winning hearts all over again. A Little History Lesson on Copper Jewelry Copper has been around forever—seriously, ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all loved it. In Roman mythology, copper was even linked to Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Beyond its beauty, many cultures believed copper had healing powers, wearing it for its supposed health benefits.Fast forward to today, and copper still has that same charm. While gold and silver might get most of the attention, copper offers something different—something warm, earthy, and full of character. Why Copper is Back in Style So, what’s bringing copper jewelry back into the spotlight? Here are a few reasons this ancient metal is making waves in the modern jewelry world: That Warm, Earthy VibeCopper’s rich, reddish-brown color is just plain gorgeous. It’s not as flashy as gold or as cool as silver, but that’s what makes it so unique. Copper’s warmth feels natural and inviting, perfect for anyone who loves jewelry with a more organic, boho, down-to-earth vibe.Plus, copper looks amazing on a variety of skin tones, making it a versatile choice for all kinds of looks. Whether you’re wearing a simple copper bangle or an intricate handmade necklace, this metal adds a touch of warmth to any outfit. Endless Design PossibilitiesOne of the coolest things about copper is how versatile it is. It’s super malleable, which means artisans can get really creative with their designs. From delicate, detailed work to bold, statement pieces, handmade copper jewelry comes in all shapes and styles.Whether you’re into minimalist designs or something more artistic and unique, there’s a piece of copper jewelry out there that’s just right for you. That versatility is a big part of why copper is a favorite among both jewelers and jewelry lovers. Affordable LuxuryLet’s be real—gold and silver can be pretty pricey. Copper, on the other hand, gives you that luxurious look without the hefty price tag. Handmade copper jewelry offers the beauty and craftsmanship you love at a price that’s much more budget-friendly. And just because it’s affordable doesn’t mean it’s any less valuable. Many handmade copper pieces are true works of art, cherished for their unique designs and the skill of the artisans who create them. Health and Healing VibesPeople have been talking about the health benefits of copper for ages. Some believe that wearing copper jewelry can help with everything from arthritis pain to improving circulation. While the jury’s still out on the science behind these claims, there’s no doubt that copper has a long history of being associated with health and wellness.Even if you’re not sold on the health benefits, there’s something special about wearing a piece of jewelry that’s been connected to healing traditions for centuries. It adds a little extra meaning to your accessories. Eco-Friendly and SustainableSustainability is a big deal at T. Randall Jewelry, and copper is a great choice if you’re trying to make more eco-friendly decisions. Copper is one of the few metals that can be recycled over and over without losing its quality, which means less waste and a smaller environmental footprint.By choosing handmade copper jewelry, you’re not just getting a beautiful piece—you’re also supporting sustainable practices and skilled artisans who care about the planet. It’s a win-win that feels as good as it looks. Caring for Your Copper Jewelry One of the cool things about copper is that it develops a natural patina over time, giving it a vintage, rustic look. But if you prefer to keep that shiny, new-copper-penny glow, don’t worry—it’s easy to maintain. Here’s how to keep your copper jewelry looking its best: Wipe it down regularly: After wearing, give your copper jewelry a quick wipe with a soft cloth to remove any dirt or oils. Polish when needed: If you want to restore the shine, use a copper polishing cloth or a simple mix of lemon juice and baking soda. Rub gently, rinse with water, and dry thoroughly. Store it right: Keep your copper jewelry in a cool, dry place—an airtight container works best to prevent tarnishing. With just a little care, your copper jewelry will stay beautiful for years to come, allowing you to enjoy its timeless appeal. Wrapping It UpHandmade copper jewelry isn’t just a passing trend—it’s a timeless choice that brings together beauty, history, and sustainability. Whether you’re adding a unique piece to your collection or searching for the perfect gift, copper jewelry offers something truly special. Its warm, earthy tones, endless design possibilities, and rich history make it a standout choice for anyone who loves a touch of elegance with a hint of character. As copper jewelry continues to make its well-deserved comeback, now’s the perfect time to explore this beautiful metal and see how it can add a little extra warmth and style to your life. So go ahead—embrace the timeless appeal of copper and let your jewelry tell a story that’s as unique as you are. XO,Tammy

Learn moreThe Real Cost of Handmade Jewelry
I recently asked a private Facebook group for an opinion of the style and price of one of my handmade necklaces. This is supposed to be a supportive group for handmade jewelry makers. Here is the piece I have listed for $129. Well, I pretty much got my ass handed to me. (Yes, I know I asked for it, but come on now.) I got comments like, "I would never pay that much for this": my thought - Shop at Walmart "You should re-think your business model": my thought - My business model is designed for profit "I hate the colors": my thought - It's the color of flowers; do you hate flowers? "Look at Etsy for similar items and check the prices": my thought - Etsy is full of pieces from China that are passed off as handmade by the seller "It's too symmetrical": my thought - ???? "Good luck with that": my thought - Thank you, I guess "Those peridot beads look like glass": my thought - They are high quality peridot "You're charging artisan prices for a beginner piece": my thought - ???? "I would only pay that much if the findings were karat gold": my thought - gold is hovering at $2300 an ounce. Should I just give you the necklace? "I would never pay myself more than a kid in a back ally in Mumbai would make": my thought - ???? Oh, really? I'm not sure I would call that constructive criticism. I know I took these comments personally, and I shouldn't do that. But, really? So I asked ChatGPT to give me a standard pricing formula for handmade jewelry retail prices. Here is what I got back: Creating a good pricing formula for handmade jewelry involves considering several factors, including the cost of materials, the time spent on making the jewelry, overhead costs, and the desired profit margin. Here is a comprehensive pricing formula to help you determine the appropriate price for your handmade jewelry: Step-by-Step Pricing Formula: Calculate Material Costs: Add up the cost of all materials used in the piece of jewelry. This includes beads, wire, clasps, gemstones, metals, and any other components. Formula: Cost = The Sum Of Materials Used in The Piece Calculate Labor Costs: Determine your hourly wage. This can vary depending on your experience, skill level, and the complexity of the work. Multiply the time spent making the jewelry by your hourly rate. Formula: Cost: Hourly Rate * Hours Spent = Labor Costs Include Overhead Costs: Overhead costs include utilities, tools, workspace rental, marketing, packaging, and other business expenses. Estimate your monthly overhead and divide by the average number of pieces you produce monthly. Formula: Overhead Cost Per Piece = Total Monthly Overhead / Average Number of Pieces Per Month Add Profit Margin: Decide on a profit margin you want to achieve. This can vary, but a common range is 20% to 30%.Formula: Profit = (Material + Cost + Overhead Cost) * Desired Profit Margin Calculate Wholesale Price: Add up the material cost, labor cost, overhead cost, and profit.Formula: Wholesale Price = Material Cost + Labor Cost + Overhead Cost + Profit Calculate Retail Price: Typically, the retail price is 2 to 2.5 times the wholesale price to account for the retailer’s profit margin. Formula: Retail Price = Wholesale Price × 2 to 2.5 Example Calculation For My Piece: Material Costs: Beads: $24.50 (Peridot and Rose Quartz) Wire: $.50 (49 Strand Beading Wire) Clasps: $1 (Gold Plated Brass) Total Material Cost: $26.00 Labor Costs: Hourly Rate: $20/hour Hours Spent: .5 hours Total Labor Cost: $20/hour × .5 hours = $10 Monthly Overhead $100: Average Pieces per Month: 4 Total Overhead Cost per Piece: $100/4 = $25 Profit: Desired Profit Margin: 25% Profit: ($26 + $10 + $25) × 0.25 = $15.25 Wholesale Price: $26 (Materials) + $10 (Labor) + $25 (Overhead) + $15.25 (Profit) Wholesale Price $76.25 Retail Price: $76.25(Wholesale price) × 2.5 = $190.63 Retail Price = $190.63 My price = $129 What I Learned: I AM an artisan, therefore it makes sense to charge artisan prices. Artisanship is in the eye of the beholder. My item is reasonably priced. I will get negative feedback and I won't die. I know that many people are not making a living from their craft, rather, they are funding their hobby. That's fine, but by selling their items at cost or wholesale, this undercuts retailers who are trying to make a living in the U.S. and create jobs in the future. Many people are not willing to pay an American a living wage for products made in America. Ok, rant over. XO, Tammy
